5 PLAB 2 Stations That Catch Everyone Off Guard
And How to Handle Them Confidently

Introduction
Some PLAB 2 stations have disproportionately high failure rates. Knowing which ones trip candidates up gives you a major advantage.
1. Breaking Bad News
Most candidates rush to deliver the diagnosis. Instead, use the SPIKES framework: Setting, Perception, Invitation, Knowledge, Emotions, Strategy.
2. Angry Patient
Never match the patient's tone. Acknowledge their frustration, apologise for the experience, and redirect to problem-solving.
3. Telephone Consultation
Without visual cues, you must verbalise everything. Summarise frequently and confirm understanding.
4. Ethics Station
Capacity, consent, and confidentiality form the triangle. Always assess capacity before proceeding.
5. Paediatric History via Parent
Address both the parent's concerns and the child's wellbeing. Use age-appropriate language when speaking to the child.
