MODULE 2: CONSULTATION MODELS & STRUCTURE

Explaining diagnoses clearly is a high-yield skill that spans all three domains. A good explanation demonstrates clinical knowledge (Domain 2), responds to the patient's concerns (Domain 3), and shows you have understood the data you gathered (Domain 1).

The Chunk-and-Check Method

  1. Give a small piece of information (one concept at a time)
  2. Check understanding: "Does that make sense so far?"
  3. Respond to questions or concerns before moving on
  4. Use analogies and simple language - avoid medical jargon
  5. Link your explanation back to the patient's own words: "You mentioned you were worried about X - let me explain why I think..."

⭐ KEY POINT: Practise explaining common conditions (diabetes, hypertension, COPD, depression, eczema, UTI, cancer referral) in 60-90 seconds of plain English. This is one of the most testable skills in the SCA.
